Stranger To Stranger's music was alternative in its flavor, borrowing from the early Cure and Echo and the Bunneymen, but the influence of Bryan Ferry and later Roxy Music is also apparent. They played clubs and venues from Boston to Virginia, but experienced their greatest success at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. where they shared the stage with Modern English, They Might Be Giants, Richard Lloyd, and members of the Velvet Underground. Their LPs charted on national college radio charts. The title song from 1985's The Child in Me experienced heavy airplay on college and commercial stations nationally. Record sales in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia were strong and the shows at the 9:30 Club, 8x10, and the Marble Bar sold out.
